Harry Potter trip to London’s West End exhilarates Year 8

When Nimax Theatres offered the English department the chance to take 50 students to see both Part One and Part Two of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child at a discounted price, we jumped at the offer.

Having incorporated Harry Potter and the Cursed Child in our Year 8 English curriculum, this provided the ideal opportunity to reinforce students understanding of the themes, characters and plots from the play when they start to study it next term.

The trip also provided a great opportunity to see the bright lights of London and enhance our students cultural experiences, which is part of our development plan.

The live stage production took place in the heart of the West End at the stunning Palace Theatre in Shaftesbury Avenue. As students will be studying this a drama-based scheme of work, it was great for the students to experience it live on stage.

Part One did not disappoint as it left us all shocked and exhilarated. There was such great acting and the lights and pyrotechnics were just breath-taking and haunting at the same time. Part Two was even more intense which left us pondering the future of the Wizarding World!

It was a long day as both productions were over 2½ hours long (plus internals), so we were pleased that we had a smooth bus journey into London. After Part One, we stretched our legs by making the early evening walk to Leicester Square’s for a McDonald’s – this gave a chance for students to experience the hustle and bustle of London and witness some amazing street entertainers.

Mrs Elaine Booth, Head of English said “The students were a real credit to the school as they behaved themselves impeccably. Having now experienced both part of the show, this will really help the students when they study the play in terms 3 and 4.”
