ACADEMIC
Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE) and Social, Moral, Spiritual and Cultural Education (SMSC) play a vital role in students’ personal development and wellbeing. They help young people develop the knowledge, skills and attributes needed to lead healthy, safe and successful lives, both now and in the future.
At South Lincolnshire Academies Trust, PSHE and SMSC are central to our ethos and are given equal importance to other areas of the curriculum. Our ambitious programme supports students in becoming responsible, respectful and active citizens while preparing them for life in modern Britain.
Our curriculum is regularly reviewed to reflect local and national priorities, student voice, safeguarding needs, statutory guidance and emerging issues affecting young people. This includes Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE), online safety, financial education, mental wellbeing, careers education and the Prevent Duty. The programme actively promotes the British Values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.
Youth engagement is central to our approach. We actively seek and value student feedback through surveys, discussions and student voice opportunities. This helps us continually review and develop our curriculum, ensuring it remains relevant, engaging and responsive to the needs, experiences and interests of our students.
Students also develop an understanding of the Protected Characteristics outlined in the Equality Act 2010. Through age-appropriate learning, students explore equality, diversity, inclusion and respect, helping them to challenge discrimination, value difference and contribute positively to a diverse society.
The programme is delivered through a combination of dedicated PSHE lessons, tutor activities, assemblies, enrichment opportunities, themed events and specialist workshops, ensuring that all students receive a broad, balanced and relevant personal development curriculum.
Students participate in a wide range of learning experiences throughout Years 7 to 13, covering topics such as:

To enhance students’ learning, we work closely with a range of specialist organisations and external agencies who provide workshops, presentations and interactive learning opportunities. These may include:
- Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs)
- Lincolnshire Fire & Rescue
- Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership
- Positive Health (Lincolnshire)
- Prison Me No Way
- MAD Agency
- Too Fast Too Soon
Through PSHE and SMSC, students are encouraged to become responsible, respectful and active citizens who appreciate diversity and understand their responsibilities within school, the local community and wider society. The curriculum supports students in understanding and respecting the Protected Characteristics, including age, disability, race, religion or belief, sex, sexual orientation, gender reassignment, pregnancy and maternity, and marriage and civil partnership, where appropriate to their age and stage of development.
