'2:22 A Ghost Story' thrills drama students with a night at the theatre

Experiencing live theatre in a variety of professional settings plays an important part of studying Performing Arts, which is why our drama department organise many great opportunities throughout the academic year.

One of these recent events was a trip to New Theatre Peterborough where our Year 11 and Sixth Form BTEC Performing Arts students enjoyed the touring production of ‘2:22 A Ghost Story’. This gave a great insight into how a professional play uses sound, lighting and timing to build tension.

The play, written by Danny Robins, is a gripping modern thriller that blends supernatural suspense with sharp, contemporary dialogue. The story centres around a late-night dinner party where tensions rise as the characters debate whether the strange noises in the house are evidence of something otherworldly – and whether the mysterious events that always occur at 2:22am can be rationally explained. With its clever twists, atmospheric staging, and edge-of-your-seat pacing, the play has become a major West End hit in recent years.

The audience were treated to powerful performances from this impressive cast, whose energy and chemistry kept the audience captivated throughout. A highlight for our students was seeing Stacey Dooley take on her first stage role as Jenny, performing opposite her real-life partner Kevin Clifton, whose natural rapport added an extra spark to the production.

It was a memorable night at the theatre, and gave a great opportunity for students to see a modern play that combines strong performances with innovative stagecraft. The play’s mix of humour, fear and emotional conflict offered plenty to discuss afterwards.

After the play, our students said “The suspense was amazing – every time the clock got close to 2:22, I felt myself getting more nervous. The actors made you believe every moment” and “I loved how the technical effects added to the story – the lighting and sound design made the whole experience so intense!”
