INCLUSION

At Bourne Academy, we recognise the vital role Young Carers play within their families and are fully committed to supporting them. We aim to ensure every Young Carer feels seen, heard, and supported—both emotionally and academically.

Our school commitment to Young Carers:

  • Giving children the best start in life
  • Raising educational attainment
  • Improving life chances

Who are Young Carers?

A Young Carer is someone under the age of 18 who helps to look after a family member who is either: ill, disabled, has a mental health condition, or misuses substances. This responsibility can affect a young person’s education, social life and wellbeing.

A Young Carer may be providing support with:

  • Cooking, housework and shopping
  • Physical care, such as helping someone in and out of bed
  • Personal care, such as assistance with dressing, toileting and administering medication
  • Managing the family budget
  • Collecting prescriptions and arranging GP or hospital appointments
  • Helping with communication
  • Looking after brothers or sisters
  • Emotional support

How to get help

If you think you might be a Young Carer, or know someone who is, please speak to Mrs Chloe Smith, who is our Young Carers Lead or any member of staff. You can also email worried@bourneacademy.org for confidential advice.

Each term, we also hold a Young Carer Breakfast where students can speak to staff and their peers to find out about the support available and have someone to speak to. The dates of these events are advertised in the school each term.
