Year 10 Sports Leaders run the Quicksticks Hockey Festival
Year 10 Sports Leaders from Bourne Academy
Students who decide to study the Sports Leaders award must show commitment and passion. This was evident by a group of our Year 10 students this week when they run a Quicksticks Hockey Festival for local primary schools. It was a fantastic achievement by this group of dedicated students as the day was a huge success.
The event was run as part of their course as they need to demonstrate the knowledge, understanding and skills already acquired to plan, run and evaluate a sports event.
The hockey event held at the Bourne Academy astro pitch included over 100 Year 5 students from seven local primary schools (Bourne Elsea Park, Bourne Westfield, Bourne Abbey, Market Deeping, Linchfield, Langtoft and Monkshouse).
The aim of the festival was to ensure the Year 5 primary students had fun, could get active and develop a lifelong love of physical activity. For our Sports Leaders, a huge emphasis is put on developing determination, building confidence and sportsmanship.
In the morning, our students planned warm-up activities and coaching sessions so the young players had all the key skills needed for a game of hockey. For some of them it was the first time they had ever played hockey so they also had to learn the rules. This was then followed in the afternoon by a hockey tournament that allowed the players to demonstrate the skills learnt during their coaching sessions.
The next event for our Year 10 Sports Leaders will be in June 2022, when they will be running a Primary School Rounders competition.
Mr Matt Leonard, Head of Boys PE who runs the Sports Leaders course at Bourne Academy said “It was a fantastic event, and it was great to see so many primary school children taking part in physical activity and having fun – there was a real buzz. The Sports Leaders have worked so hard all year on developing their skills and the qualities needed to be able to lead sessions. They were professional, polite, motivational and showed real leadership qualities – going above and beyond expectations. The students were an absolute credit to themselves and the school.”
Mr Rupert Gibson, who is the Primary School Games Co-ordinator said “All of the children were fantastic. They were very well behaved and a credit to their schools. It was great to see how much they improved in such a short time, how well they played and how much fun they had. We were looking at how well teams showed ‘determination’, one of our School Games values. We wanted pupils to keep trying their best and they did this brilliantly.”
ABOUT THE SPORTS LEADERS AWARD
The Level 2 Award in Community Sports Leadership (CSL2) is available to selected Year 10 students who have shown a keen interest in PE and sport or who want study the Level 3 CTEC Sport & Physical Activity course at Bourne Academy Sixth Form.
This is a nationally recognised qualification that enables successful learners to lead safe, purposeful and enjoyable sport and physical activity under indirect supervision.
It’s a fantastic opportunity for our students who are interested in sports coaching and will also improve their communication skills, leadership qualities and confidence.
The course is run over 48 learning hours where students are required to commit to attend the Sports Leaders sessions as part of the school extra-curricular programme that takes place on Thursday evenings. The students must also commit to other after-school sessions that will be arranged throughout the year to help fulfil their leadership hours.
The Community Sports Leadership award is great preparation before progressing onto Level 3 CTEC Sport & Physical Activity course that can lead to studying sport at university. It is also beneficial for students who will want part-time jobs in coaching or working in the leisure industry.
- If there are any Year 9 students who are interested in becoming a future Sports Leader, they should speak to Mr Leonard.
