Year 10 Sports Leaders run the Primary School Rounders Festival

Our Year 10 students who study the Sports Leaders award have the opportunity to get involved with some really important events at the school as well as widening their own personal development.

One of these events was a Primary School Rounders Festival involving six local primary schools, which had over 70 Year 6 students participating from these schools. As the students are in Year 6, this is also a great transition event to help students in their transition from primary to secondary school.

The theme of the day was learning how to play rounders and make new friends, so students from each of the primary schools were mixed up into different teams so they play in teams based on the school they are attending in September. This then helped them get to know a few new friends ready for Year 7.

Mr Matt Leonard, Head of Boys PE said “The event was a huge success with the primary students thoroughly enjoyed the day. Our Year 10 Sports Leaders were a credit to themselves and the school with many of the primary school teachers commenting on their excellent leadership skills.”

ABOUT THE SPORTS LEADERS AWARD

The Level 2 Award in Community Sports Leadership (CSL2) is available to selected Year 10 students who have shown a keen interest in PE and sport or who want study the Level 3 CTEC Sport & Physical Activity course at Bourne Academy Sixth Form.

This is a nationally recognised qualification that enables successful learners to lead safe, purposeful and enjoyable sport and physical activity under indirect supervision.

It’s a fantastic opportunity for our students who are interested in sports coaching and will also improve their communication skills, leadership qualities and confidence.

The course is run over 48 learning hours where students are required to commit to attend the Sports Leaders sessions as part of the school extra-curricular programme that takes place on Thursday evenings. The students must also commit to other after-school sessions that will be arranged throughout the year to help fulfil their leadership hours.

The Community Sports Leadership award is great preparation before progressing onto Level 3 CTEC Sport & Physical Activity course that can lead to studying sport at university. It is also beneficial for students who will want part-time jobs in coaching or working in the leisure industry.

If there are any Year 9 students who are interested in becoming a future Sports Leader, they should speak to Mr Leonard.
