Year 11 netball team off to winning start in SLAT tournament
As there are now four schools who are part of South Lincolnshire Academies Trust, last year gave the perfect opportunity for all the schools to participate in the first ever SLAT Sports Tournament. This is where football and netball teams for all year groups compete in friendly mini-tournaments against their respective years and gain points over the whole academic year.
The first fixtures for this year involved Year 11, and after Bourne Academy finished as runners-up overall last year, our students were keen to get off to a flying start and set the pace for the other year groups to follow.
It was a fantastic start for our Year 11 netball team who won their group last year and once again they were victorious picking up maximum points by winning all three games.
Our year 11 football team also picked up valuable points for the overall table as they finished runners-up in their tournament after being undefeated by winning two games and drawing one game.
Ms Coles, Trust Director for Sport & PE said “This was a great first tournament of the 2023/24 season, played with an excellent spirit. Well done to all the SLAT schools.”
NETBALL REVIEW
The first game against Giles Academy was end-to-end in the first half with Bourne leading 5-3 at half-time. There was some great centre court play from Evie Benson, Millie Green and Emily Carey, but the Giles defence fought hard against them. The team settled well in the second half and their confidence grew with the game ending 13-5 to Bourne. The player of this match went to Evie Benson for her outstanding centre court play.
The second game against Spalding Academy saw the girls play some fantastic netball with Molly Barrett, Felicity Wafaa and Ariane Vaughan all making great interceptions to help them secure a convincing 10-1 victory. The player of this match was Lily Thomas for her outstanding centre court play.
The final match against Cowley Academy was played in great spirit with the whole team linking together and playing extremely well. The combination of Lily Thomas, Emily Carey and Ellie Ball in attack, highlighted some outstanding attacking play. They won the final game 16-6, with the player of the match being awarded to Ellie Ball for her excellent shooting.
The year 11 netball squad includes:

FOOTBALL REVIEW
Our first game saw us up against Giles Academy where we controlled much of the game and dictated the play, but it took time for us to find the back of the net. Eventually we broke the deadlock and two further goals followed which saw us win the first game 3-0.
We went on to play Spalding Academy, which turned in to a battle of midfield. Harry French in goal had very little to do but we were unable to score ourselves which saw us end the game with a frustrating 0-0 draw. Spalding had won their earlier game 2-0 which meant we both went into the final game level on points, with us just ahead on goal difference.
As we entered the final game against Cowley Academy we knew that goal difference would be key to winning the tournament. We started well but missed early opportunities and managed to win the game 3-0 hoping this would be enough to secure first place. In the other game, Spalding won 7-0 which gave them a superior goal difference and meant we were runners-up, even though the team were undefeated.
