Girls Futsal Teams compete in inter-school tournaments

Bourne Academy took two teams of students to compete in the U13 and U15 Girls Superzone Futsal Tournaments held at Haven High Academy in Boston.

Futsal is similar to 5-a-side indoor football but uses a smaller and heavier ball making it a fast paced and skilful game. Playing Futsal can also develop close control ball techniques which can improve performance when playing traditional football.

This was the first tournament for the U13 team and our Year 7 girls were a year younger than every other team in the competition who mainly selected Year 8 students. Despite this, the girls really impressed with their determination, teamwork and improvement as the day progressed.

They narrowly lost their first three games: 2-0 to Spalding High School, 2-1 to Spalding Academy and 1-0 to University Academy Holbeach. They then saved their best performance for the last group game where they earnt a fantastic 2-0 win over Bourne Grammar School. In the play-off match they also secured a 2-0 victory over Thomas Middlecott Academy.

Mrs Pickard, Teacher of PE said “The whole team should be incredibly proud of their efforts. Well done to Emily Payton who was our Player of the Tournament for her excellent reflexes and consistency in goal. The experience gained this year will undoubtedly put them in a strong position when they return to the competition next season at their own age level.”

The U15 girls’ team were drawn in the toughest group having to play both of the eventual finalists. They finished third in their group with all matches being closely contested and low scoring. They won 2-0 against Spalding Academy, drew 1-1 against University Academy Holbeach and narrowly lost 1-0 against Bourne Grammar School and 2-0 against Spalding High School. In their play-off match against Cowley Academy it was another close game as it ended 1-1 at the final whistle.

Mr Dennis, Teacher of PE said “Across the tournament, the girls demonstrated teamwork, resilience and a willingness to compete against some of the strongest schools in the region. All performances showed real promise and plenty of character. Well done to all the girls involved — a fantastic effort throughout the day.”
