A game of two halves in County Cup Final

Making the final in any competition is an achievement in itself and our Year 9 Boys Football Team can feel incredibly proud that they reached the U14 County Cup Final against Bourne Grammar, which was held at Sleaford Town Football Club today.

The final was certainly a game of two halves as Bourne Academy immediately started the better by taking the lead after 2 minutes with a great goal by Alex Glenn-Mitchell. Bourne Grammar were able to come back to 1-1, but the pressure on the Grammar goal from our boys was too much as a close-range goal from Dan Ellington meant Bourne Academy were leading 2-1 at half time.

It was a close second half with very little between the two sides in terms of possession and commitment. Dan Ellington had a cracking effort that rattled the crossbar and we continually pressed forward, but Bourne Grammar were able to capitalise on their chances and managed to take the lead with two impressive strikes. None of our players let this get them down and were outstanding by giving their all until the final whistle by making effort challenge, tackle, block and run possible.

The final score in this tight final was 3-2 to Bourne Grammar and we would like to congratulate their team for a good spirited game. Whilst our players might feel disappointed to lose after working hard to get to the final in a fantastic season, the whole team showed great team spirit and sportsmanship. All players received runners-up medals after the match and should feel incredibly proud about how their have represented the school.

Mr Matt Dennis, who coached the boys team said “This was a great opportunity for the boys and they started off fantastically well. We tried to play some good football and utilise the strengths we have in our team, but it just wasn’t to be our day. Despite letting our lead slip they boys continued to battle well and should be immensely proud of their achievement getting to the final. We will certainly look to go one step further next year! A special mention goes to Alfie Ball who was superb at right back.”

Mr Matt Sammy, Head of School also wanted to congratulate the players and said “We as a school community are incredibly proud of our Year 9 boys team who represented the school so well throughout the whole tournament. Although they were runners-up on this occasion, we know how talented this team of players are. I am confident they will continue their success in the forthcoming seasons, and achieve their ambition of a winners trophy.”
