Black History Month educates and celebrates achievements
Last term, the History department organised a series of activities for Black History Month to celebrate the lives and impact of black people from all over the world.
One of these activities was a competition where students could design a history timeline that featured events and achievements involving historical black women.
To reward our students’ efforts, there were prizes and points for the best projects. Congratulations to Jake Fenner in Year 7 (1st), Natalya Krywyszyn in Year 9 (2nd) and Roxie Bates in Year 9 (3rd).
The history department were impressed with the attention to detail in Jake’s design and how he created a scroll and aged the paper as well as detailed descriptions about the historical figures.
The reason why the school actively participates in Black History Month is that History can often be ‘whitewashed’ in the sense that important black figures are forgotten about.
In the past, racism was much more common place and historical evidence sometimes misses out or understates black contributions. Black History Month acts as a reminder of the amazing contributions black people have made that have changed our lives today.
