Cooking a quick and nutritious hot meal in one hour

Learning how to safely prepare and cook a quick and nutritious hot meal in just one hour was the lesson of the day for our Year 7 students when they made French Bread Pizzas this week. They even had time in the lesson to do some coursework while their pizzas were in the oven and of course, the washing up!

To start off with, everyone learnt about the importance of food hygiene by regularly washing their hands and using the correct work surfaces for food preparation. Safety is also just as important as there were demonstrations from the teacher on how to use sharp knifes correctly and use the correct protection when handling items in the oven.

This simple and tasty recipe used part-baked or fresh baguettes (for speed rather than making the dough) and students were able to bring in their own favourite toppings so all pizzas were individual. As well as a tomato base, students chose peppers, sweetcorn, onions, pepperoni, cooked chicken, herbs, grated cheese and mozzarella plus one student who doesn’t eat tomatoes made a BBQ chicken version.

The recipe is a healthy alternative to the supermarket or take-away pizzas as you know what exactly what has gone into them and they will have less fat and additives.

As the cookery lesson took place during period 3 (at the end in the morning), it meant that the students had their lunch prepared for the day as well. Hopefully the student’s families will get to sample their cooking in the future!
