'Hour of Code' celebrated as part of Computer Science Education Week
The ‘Hour of Code’ takes place each year during ‘Computer Science Education Week’ and all across the world, over a million young people participated to celebrate Computer Science.
At Bourne Academy, during the IT lessons our students each participated in a one-hour coding activity and everyone received a certificate.
Some of the coding activities include using Python, Scratch and HTML where students can learn to program games, apps, graphics, animation or software. The engaging coding game activities included Minecraft, Frozen, Star Wars, 3D T-Rex, My Google logo and many more.
The Hour of Code uses a visual learning platform to make it accessible for all abilities so it did not matter if students are completely new to coding or if they have been doing it for years, there was something to help students learn the basics or to challenge them.
Mrs Moorfoot, Head of Computer Science at Bourne Academy said “With our students understanding coding and Computer Science from Year 7, it helps them nurture their problem-solving skills, logic and creativity. In the workplace, more jobs are requiring coding skills and, in the future, this could be just as important as reading and writing. The Hour of Code is a fantastic initiative, in which all of our KS3 students were involved.”
