Interactive Religious Studies lesson explores real-life issues
Throughout the whole of this week, our Key Stage 3 students have been participating in an interactive Religious Studies lesson using multi-media tablets featuring real-life issues and situations they may face in everyday life.
GSUS Live is a national schools programme, which has been kindly supported by Christian volunteers from Bourne Baptist Church. It has been specifically designed for secondary school students and explores the three themes of fear, forgiveness and rejection through the teachings of Jesus.
Using the tablets and headphones, students worked in pairs to investigate the themes by choosing a relatable character who requires their help and advice. Students are given different scenarios to choose from as the story develops depending on what they select. At the end of the session, the whole group were then able to review and reflect on their choices.
The GSUS Live programme also helps support the SMSC programme where we prioritise students personal development to build confidence and resilience. This is one of the strengths highlighted in the recent Ofsted report, where it stated “There are regular occasions for pupils to discuss moral and ethical issues. This reinforces their well-thought-through spiritual, moral, social and cultural education.”
Mrs Preston, Head of RE at Bourne Academy said “Thank you to GSUS Live, Matt Wild from CROPS and the volunteers from Bourne Baptist Church for taking the time to spend the whole week with our students as there was a real buzz in the classroom. The groups found the topics we covered were thought-provoking as the characters scenarios were relevant to them. This really helped develop listening, reflection and empathy skills to consider responses from both a Christian and personal perspective.”
