We Explore Drawing workshop explores the art of portraiture

Our Year 9 Art students had the exciting opportunity to take part in an Art workshop with a professional artist from the company We Explore Drawing.

This inspiring session led by award-winning artist Paul Brandford focused on the art of portraiture and aimed to expand the student’s skills in drawing through painting. Students were guided through the process of creating expressive portraits, emphasising the importance of observation, proportion, and the use of different materials, including charcoal and paint.

The session provided a unique chance for students to explore their creativity while learning practical skills that will most certainly help them in their future art lessons. It showed students how to understand a healthy balance between control and expression, whilst adding personal humour to their work. It also helped push some students out of their comfort zone, and through perseverance they learnt how to work through the problems with each task to create very promising outcomes.

Mrs Scott, Teacher of Art & Design said “The students showed great enthusiasm and were engaged throughout the session. It was a fantastic opportunity for them to work alongside a professional artist and gain a valuable insight into the artistic process. We hope this experience has inspired them to continue developing their skills in art and creative expression.”

Paul from We Explore Drawing was impressed with the quality of the work students produced during the workshop. He said “Much of the artwork produced today would have looked very much at home in a Year 10 or Year 11 art display. The quality of materials provided by the art department shows they back their students to achieve well. The students were a pleasure to work with and a great advert for the school in particular.”

Our students learnt a great deal during the workshop and were certainly enthused about the experience. They enjoyed learning about the different ways of adding texture when painting, how to combine a range of colours instead of one block of colour to express emotions and just being creative by putting pen to paper.
