Mathematical problem-solving skills are put to the challenge

A group of our exceptional A-level Mathematics students in Year 13 (as well as one GCSE student in Year 11) recently participated in the UK Maths Trust (UKMT) Senior Mathematical Challenge.

The challenge in a national competition designed to develop students’ problem-solving skills as it encourages mathematical reasoning, precision of thought and fluency to make students think.

Our Sixth Formers and Year 11 student completed the 90-minute challenge under test conditions and it comprised of 25 incredibly tough questions that focused on mathematical reasoning with no calculators or measuring instruments allowed.

To make the challenge even more difficult, they get four points for each correct answer, but if they get any of the questions wrong, they are deducted one point to discourage guessing.

Below are just some of the questions that our students had to solve.

A special mention goes to Hugo Mo and Rosie Heal in Year 13 who achieved a Silver Certificate in the challenge to be placed in the top third of all students, and also Chloe Chan in Year 11 who has demonstrated her mathematical skills are already at A-level standard and she is looking forward to completing the challenge again in Sixth Form.

Thank you to Mr Graham and all the teachers in the Maths department for working with our students to prepare them for the challenge and stretch their thinking.
