    Understanding that we all don’t share the same beliefs and values. Respecting those values, ideas and beliefs of others whilst not imposing our own onto them.

  • Why are British Values important?

    We see British Values as underpinning what it is to be a citizen in a modern and diverse Britain. They allow us to create environments free from discrimination, intolerance and hate. They help us to challenge prejudice and stereotyping, whilst strengthening relationships within the community.

The nine protected characteristics

  • Age

    Discrimination based on age is unlawful, and everyone should be treated equitably, regardless of age.

  • Disability

    Reasonable adjustments must be made to provide equal opportunities for people with disabilities.

  • Gender Reassignment

    Discrimination against transgender individuals is illegal, and they must be treated with dignity and respect.

  • Marriage and Civil Partnership

    Married and civil partnered individuals must not face discrimination.

  • Pregnancy & Maternity

    Discrimination against pregnant individuals or those on maternity leave is illegal.

  • Race

    Discrimination based on race or ethnicity is illegal, and everyone should be treated equitably.

  • Religion or Belief

    Discrimination based on religion or belief is illegal, and individuals' beliefs must be respected.

  • Sex

    Discrimination against men, women, and non-binary individuals is illegal.

  • Sexual Orientation

    Discrimination based on sexual orientation is illegal, including discrimination against individuals who identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, or any other sexual orientation.

We have lots of new challenges ahead, but also plenty of opportunities to shine and show just what we can achieve together.
