A young carer is someone under the age of 18 who helps to look after a family member who is either: ill, disabled, has a mental health condition, or misuses substances. This responsibility can affect a young person’s education, social life, and wellbeing.
Our Commitment
At Bourne Academy, we recognise the vital role young carers play within their families and are fully committed to supporting them. We aim to ensure every young carer feels seen, heard, and supported—both emotionally and academically.
Our school commitment to young carers:
Giving children the best start in life
Raising educational attainment
Improving life chances
The Lincolnshire Young Carers Service is committed in supporting young carers.
A young carer may be providing support with:
• Cooking, housework and shopping • Physical care, such as helping someone in and out of bed • Personal care, such as assistance with dressing, toileting and administering medication • Managing the family budget • Collecting prescriptions and arranging GP or hospital appointments • Helping with communication • Looking after brothers or sisters • Emotional support
The Lincolnshire Carers Service can also provide support for young carers from the age of 16, depending on need.
• Designated Young Carers Lead: A named staff member who is the first point of contact for young carers. • Confidential Support: A safe space to talk about challenges and receive guidance. • Flexible Learning Support: Adjustments to homework deadlines, access to catch-up sessions, and understanding from staff. • Peer Support Groups: Opportunities to connect with other young carers. • Referral to External Services: Help accessing local young carers services and charities.
